Svínafellsjökul is a 8 kilometers long and approximately 800 meters wide glacier tongue located in the south of Iceland. It’s a popular spot not far from Skaftafell, in Vatnajökull National Park (Classified on the World Heritage List by UNESCO). At Svínafellsjökul, you can can take great walks on the glacier with crampons and ice picks. It is a fairly expensive excursion but but it remains an unforgettable experience to try in Iceland. Do not try to go alone if you are new to this kind of walking because it is full of potential dangers.

Number 15  Ice Cave

Evaluation 3 stars what to see in Iceland

Description & advice

Exploring the ice caves was one of the main reasons I wanted to return to Iceland during the winter, and I was not disappointed. This kind of excursion is incredible, you start at the foot of the glacier, then after putting on your crampons, you start the hike on the glacier. After this fun walk on the ice (which can be tiring depending on your fitness level), you explore the breathtaking ice caves, with their amazing colors and shapes inside. This kind of excursion is expensive, but if you’re coming to Iceland, it’s really a great experience to live.

Number 17  Diamond beach

Evaluation 2,5 stars what to see in Iceland

Description & advice

Very close to Jökulsárlón, “Diamond Beach” is not to be missed if you are nearby. You will see blue and white icebergs of all shapes and sizes gliding towards the Atlantic Ocean or on the black sand beach. Be very careful about the waves on this beach, I have personally seen several people who were posing on the ice blocks, and who fell after a big wave came to sweep everything. It’s a pretty funny scene to watch I admit, but I imagine not easy to live. In my video you can see a sweet version of what can happen there 😅.

Stokksnes peninsula, also known as Vestrahorn or Vesturhorn, is a beautiful landscape of Iceland with mountains, a black sand beach, vegetation and the sea. It is located near Hôfn and offers a magnificent panorama in all seasons. The place is vast, so you shouldn’t be bothered by too many other tourists, which is very nice.

Number 19  Seyðisfjörður

Evaluation 2 stars what to see in Iceland

Description & advice

Seyðisfjörður is a small town of around 700 people, but one of the most charming in Iceland. This city has been inhabited by Norwegians since 1848, and their old houses are still standing. Seyðisfjörður is surrounded by mountains and situated at the mouth of a majestic fjord. People live there mainly from fishing, but tourism has recently taken a larger part in the economy. I am sure you will enjoy these colorful streets and Norwegian style wooden houses. It is also possible to camp at Seyðisfjörður from May to September.

Description & advice

Also known as the “narrow fjord”, Mjóifjörður is an 18 km long fjord between Norðfjörður and Seyðisfjörður. Although quite isolated, it is popular with tourists and locals alike. In summer, if you have your own car, do not hesitate to take the beautiful road along the fjord which leads to the Dalatangi lighthouse (exact position: 65.270255, -13.575244). You will arrive in a very peaceful area, with waterfalls, sheep and Icelandic horses on the way.

Evaluation 2,5 stars what to see in Iceland

Description & advice

Dettifoss is an impressive waterfall 45 meters high and 100 meters wide. It is located in Vatnajokull National Park in the north of Iceland. It is considered to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe with its 500 cubic meters of water falling per second. What is particularly interesting with this waterfall is that you can get very close to the stream and really feel the power of nature.
The Dettifoss waterfall is easily accessible from Route 1 ring road and can be seen from both sides of the canyon.

Evaluation 2 stars what to see in Iceland

Description & advice

Hverir is the largest geothermal field in the north of Iceland, just off Route 1 ring road. It is also close to Lake Myvatn and the town of Reykjahlíð. From the parking lot you can already hear the whistles coming from the ground, see the smoke and smell the strong smell of rotten eggs. This geothermal field is not to be missed if you are visiting the north of Iceland. It is such an unusual site where the colors of the earth are amazing. Behind the geothermal field is a hill that you can climb to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view.

Number 23  Goðafoss

Evaluation 2 stars

Description & advice

Goðafoss waterfall, which translates to “the waterfall of the gods”, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Besides its height of 12 meters and its width of 30 meters, its particular interest comes from its circular shape. Goðafoss can be seen from two sides, which I advise you to see both. Also, do not hesitate to walk the paths near the flowing water. Goðafoss is located just off ring road 1, between Akureyri (45 mins) and Myvatn. So you shouldn’t miss it if you go around Iceland.

Number 24  Kirkjufell

Evaluation 3 stars

Description & advice

Kirkjufell Mountain is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. This cylindrical mountain was formed from numerous volcanic eruptions, and rises 463 meters above sea level. It is located in the fishing village of Grundarfjörður on the Snaefellsnesnes peninsula. In summer, the mountain is very green and perfect for hiking. In winter, snow covers the mountain and offers a picturesque landscape during the Northern Lights for example. Close to the mountain, do not miss the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall (exact position: 64.926362, -23.311413), for me it is one of the most emblematic views of Iceland. You may also recognize this mountain that was present in the Game of thrones series. 😉.

Number 25 Djúpalónssandur

Evaluation 1,5 stars

Description & advice

Djúpalónssandur beach and bay are located in Snæfellsjökull National Park. It is a beach made up of pebbles of black lava, with aggressive and unpredictable waves. On this beach, you will find the ruins of a wreck, as well as 4 stones of different weight (from 23 kg to 155 kg), which were used to test the strength of the fishermen. If you managed to lift the heaviest stone, post your photo in the comment area and I will send you a gift! 😉 I particularly recommend that you walk to the sea and continue on the right side, you will see an area with beautiful columns of black volcanic rock.
